Davis in 1835 purchased the interest of James C. Walker of the firm Gallaher and Walker, publishers of the Virginia newspaper "The Times and Compiler, thus the firm became Gallaher and Davis. Mr. John S. Gallaher soon retired and William H. Davis became sole publisher of the newspaper in November 1836. Davis eventually took on two partners and the firm became Carrington, Cowardin and Davis in 1847. The paper abandoned its neutral perspective in 1844 and became a decided supported of the Whig party. In 1850 Davis and Carrington formed a partnership to publish a newspaper focussed on news rather than politics and personal notices - the Richmond "Daily Dispatch." Davis soon sold his interest to Cowardin. After a long hiatus, Davis established "The Democratic Advocate" in 1865, but turned over the operation to Joseph M. Parke about a year later.
